Well gotcha there again, a typical action movie has a crap story, and a typical movie with a good story has too little action
I don't think there's anyone that plays a game just for the story and nothing else. But having no story at all isn't much fun. Games like Mario Party, just about any flight sim, and I'mma put Gran Turismo among the ranks; they might be nice to play for a bit to explore the limits of, but after you've found the programmers' boundaries, then what? It's not that a game should be played for the story, but that there should be a story to keep the player interested past day 1.
Let's say Saint's Row didn't have a story. They let you customize your character, and then drop you on a street corner, with your only direction being tool tips that pop up occasionally telling you what a button will do when you press it. You might drive whatever cars you come upon that look cool, call up a few homies and walk around shooting random pedestrians, fling poop all over the buildings around you. Maybe you'll head to the minigame markers on the map, or explore other areas to see if they spawn different types of vehicles. Now you've been playing for a week maybe and you've done it all; was that worth the 20 quid you laid down for it (assuming you got it from the bargain bin)? And in our current reality, what makes the game stand out in your mind, compared to GTA? Is it the slightly different selection of cars? The slightly stranger selection of weapons? I don't think that's it. I should hope it's the wild and crazy antics of the Saints that cements the game in your memory. That's the reason you give half a crap about what happened to Johnny Gat, the reason why SR4's leaked trophies stir any interest in you about Viola's past, the reason why you know the Saints are the badassiest group on the planet. Nobody plays just for the story, but it definitely makes you want to continue playing.
I've probably never reached the programmer's boundaries so I can't answer that question.
What makes Saints Row stand out compared to GTA? Where do I start? And I don't think the Penetrator is 'slightly' stranger than anything in GTA XD
How do you know I give half a crap about Gat? What makes you think that one SR4 trophy has me interested over the others? I think it's you who's interested in that one, not me.
So the story keeps you interested, great. What happens when the story's finished? If the story's long enough, great. If not, you've got a problem. If there's no story, you can keep going for as long as you wish, rather than as long as the story keeps going.
One last thing. I have a habit of deleting my gamesaves and starting the game from the beginning. If the game has a story, you're gonna get the same story (unless it has multiple endings or you can skip the cutscenes).
Obviously this is something we can agree to disagree, and the fact I'm a racing game fan means I rarely play games with a story, so I usually really don't see the point of storylines
O my Actually, most of those were rhetorical, 'you' was a short word to stand in for 'any random person' But using 'you' literally, I remember you hold the belief that Johnny didn't actually die; without a story, that thought would never have come to mind. And I didn't say that one trophy interested you more or less, but that was the only one you voluntarily gave your thoughts on (besides your curiosity over the glitch gun) so that's the example I used.
And when the story's finished, it's finished For me, that's the point at which I'm done playing, assuming I've done the side quest(story)s too. And I delete a good share a saves too, usually because I forgot where in the story I left off But, I'm okay with getting the same story again, 'cause I still wanna know how it ends I still need to replay Mass Effect 3 'cause the story up 'til the end was awesome, but the ending was sh*t. They came up with a slightly better ending in the DLC due to fan backlash over the seemingly-incomplete story, and even though it's only slightly better, I'll happily replay all that awesomeness up until the ending, and find out how it now ends.
Aaand yes, it seems we must stay on opposite sides. As you well know, I'm only a fan of the MC line, and that's mostly because it's a Rockstar game And on the opposite side of that final note, I don't see the point of playing a game just to do it.
Actually I didn't give my thoughts on the Viola trophy, I just repeated what someone else said XD
'And when the story's finished, it's finished' That's why I don't like stories. And on yet another opposite of your final note, I enjoy playing the game, not watching cutscenes. That's what movies are for
